She enjoyed Caribbean vacations, lounging in the sun, and a good tan. Not anymore. Cheryl, 58, was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2006 and underwent topical chemotherapy. She is cancer free but cautious of the sun. She is one of more than a million people diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States…
The three types of skin cancer – malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma – are primarily the result of genetics and exposure to ultraviolet light. “Sun is the main cause,” said Dr. David Van Dam, a dermatologist with Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. Risk factors include fair skin, freckles, blue eyes, red or blond hair, and a family history of skin cancer, Van Dam said.
Sunburn, especially blistering sun burn, can also increase a person’s risk for skin cancer, he said. Even occasional tanning can be harmful. “There is no such thing as a safe tan,” he said. “The only safe tan comes out of a bottle.” … Sun avoidance and sun protection are the best ways to decrease the risk of skin cancer, Van Dam and Khanna said.
