Spread the word about the tanning calculator
Written by suNNy on 31 May 2010 – 6:01 -On the beach last week I saw some people slowly turn red. Why? Because they didn’t apply sunscreen or because they didn’t re-apply it. Maybe they’re not aware of the risks involved, maybe they are not well informed. Maybe they just don’t care.
Later that night, I was sitting in a restaurant. Mom and dad and their 2 children were just one table away. The 2 kids were quite burnt. Their skin was red hot and they suffered from the increasing itching and pain. The worst had probably yet to come. Mom and dad were more lucky. I suppose they spent most of the time under an umbrella. Kids don’t. They play around and do not take care if their parents don’t tell them to.

Sundicator, the free sun protection tool
Written by suNNy on 29 May 2010 – 17:00 -Sunny days are coming now. For most of us there will be plenty of time to spend outdoors, on the beach, in the garden, walking and biking in the city or in the mountains, golfing on the green… And we all know that we need to get the right sun protection. Therefore we apply sunscreen, among other protective measures.
But what sun protection factor SPF do you need? And how long will it protect you? That is what Sundicator.net will tell you.
Let’s say you have a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 12. Will it still be effective after 2 hours or will you have to re-apply it more frequently? Most people really don’t know. They are just guessing and hoping that they don’t get sunburn. It might be OK when you apply enough sunscreen. You can never get an overdose. But there is a flip side to that coin: the price of your sunscreen or sun tan lotion. These products don’t come cheap. So, when you apply the double of what you really need, you’re wasting half of your money.
Sundicator.net calculates your safe sun tanning time
Now you can calculate the time your sunscreen really protects you. On the sundicator.net site you find a small application that immediately calculates your safe tanning time, based on you skin type, the UV-index and the sun protection factor of your sunscreen.
Get to know your skin type
Skin types are divided into to 6 classes: from the fair, pale skin to the deep dark skin. It is extremely important that you know your skin type. Ask your doctor about it if you’re not sure after reading the descriptions on the site. As a rule of thumb one could say that the lower the type number, the more protection you need.
Know the UV-index
Knowing the UV-index is at least as important as knowing your skin type. UV are the ultraviolet rays from the sun. Some of these rays are harmful when the exposure time is too long. Local weather stations often give predictions on the UV-index for some days ahead. On the internet there are several sites that do the same. If you want to check it for yourself, you can buy an UV-index card and measure the UV-index when you go out in the sun. Keep in mind that UV-rays at 10 o’clock in the morning tend to be as half as strong as at noon.
Sun protection factor
The sun protection factor of your sunscreen is the third important element in the calculation of your safe sun tanning time. Everybody knows that when you double the factor you double your protection time. But, again, it is crucial to know how much protection your skin needs and how much sunshine it will receive.
Less UV when cloudy, more in the mountains?
The first statement is not necessarily true: when the sky is covered with clouds at high noon in the summer UV-radiation is about 10-20% less. Sunscreen and other protection is a must. In the mountains the air is thinner and your skin is likely to receive more UV-rays. Depending on the height it could be up to the double. Also remember that snow and water reflect UV-rays, thus increasing the effect of the sun. Especially body parts that are normally less exposed, like the underside of the chin and the nose, are more vulnerable.
Protect yourself in the sun. This is a great way to take care of your skin. It’s a great gift to your body too. And get to know your safe sun tanning time by surfing to http://sundicator.net/uv-calculator.
Your skin will be grateful to you!
